Kanpur Violence: Security Beefed Up At Sensitive Locations, 36 Arrested & 3 FIRs Filed

Kanpur Violence: 36 persons were arrested in the Kanpur violence case, and three FIRs were lodged.

New Delhi: In the Kanpur violence case, 36 people were arrested, and three FIRs were filed. The situation is under control, and police have been stationed in high-risk areas, with Police Commissioner Vijay Singh Meena promising harsh punishment against miscreants, news agency ANI reported.

Security has also been increased between Kanpur's Yateem Khana and Parade junctions.

“More people are being identified on the basis of the video and action under the Gangster Act will be taken against conspirators and their property will be either seized or demolished,” Police Commissioner Vijay Singh Meena was quoted by ANI in its report.

On Friday, a violent brawl erupted between two groups from different communities over a market stoppage in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

In the aftermath of the fights, two people and one police officer were wounded.

The violence began when some individuals attempted to close stores, which was resisted by the opposing faction.

The violence occurred in Kanpur as protesters attempted to compel merchants to close their doors in response to an alleged insult to Prophet Mohammed on a television show.

Clashes erupted in the city's Pared, Nai Sadak, and Yateemkhana neighborhoods following Friday namaz.

As members of one of the groups sought to close stores over claimed derogatory statements made by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a recent televised discussion, the two sides tossed bombs and opened fire.

In response to the statements, several local officials, including Maulana Mohammed Ali (MMA) Jauhar Fans Association chairman Hayat Zafar Hashmi, asked for the closing of stores after Friday namaz.

They had also staged a march in which they challenged members of the opposing community, resulting in violent fights.

Twelve Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) units have been dispatched to the region to preserve law and order.
